Four Horses of the Apocalypse

Four Horses of the Apocalypse

There seems to be a lot of confusion and outright misconception concerning the “Four Horses of the Apocalypse” as revealed in Revelation.

6 1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, Come. (ASV)
Revelation 6:1

Four Seals

Each of the first four seals unveils a horse associated with it.

The First Seal

6 2 And I saw, and behold, a white horse, and he that sat thereon had a bow; and there was given unto him a crown: and he came forth conquering, and to conquer. (ASV)
Revelation 6:2

White signifies clean, pure, just, and approvable. The white horse is a symbol of the preaching of the gospel, which is clean, pure, just, and approvable both to men and to God.

The white horse symbolizes the gospel.

The rider on the first horse must be Christ.

The Second Seal

6 3 And when he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, Come. 4 And another horse came forth, a red horse: and to him that sat thereon it was given to take peace from the earth, and that they should slay one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. (ASV)
Revelation 6:3-4

Red here signifies the shedding of blood. Thus, the red horse is a symbol of the raging of war, which is altogether a matter of shedding blood. “To take peace from the earth,” “they should slay one another,” and “given unto him a great sword” all clearly indicate war.

The red horse obviously symbolizes war.

The rider on the second horse is war.

The Third Seal

6 5 And when he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, Come. And I saw, and behold, a black horse; and he that sat thereon had a balance in his hand. 6 And I heard as it were a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, A measure of wheat for a shilling, and three measures of barley for a shilling; and the oil and the wine hurt thou not. (ASV)
Revelation 6:5-6

Here, black, indicating the dearth (Jer. 14:1-4), signifies the color of the visage of famished people (Lam. 4:8-9; 5:9-10). The black horse is a symbol of the spreading of famine, which causes a black visage.

The black horse from the description symbolizes famine.

The rider on the third horse is famine,

The Fourth Seal

6 7 And when he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, Come. 8 And I saw, and behold, a pale horse: and he that sat upon him, his name was Death; and Hades followed with him. And there was given unto them authority over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with famine, and with death, and by the wild beasts of the earth. (ASV)
Revelation 6:7-8

The pale horse (directly stated) symbolizes death.

The rider on the fourth horse is clearly identified as death.

First Horse Has Been Wrongly Interpreted

Firstly, the first seal, unveils a WHITE horse. White always symbolizes PURITY. The first horse and rider are NOT in the same category as the other three.

A rider and bow (NO arrow -- the arrow has already been shot).

What is PURE? The Good news of the Gospel! The rider is Christ, and the horse bearing Him is the gospel! There is no arrow in the bow because the gospel has been proclaimed, starting from Jerusalem to the uttermost parts of the earth.

The gospel has always been followed by war, famine, and death throughout the earth (instigated by Satan) BUT they will never overtake or stop it!!!

The white horse symbolizes the gospel.

The rider on the first horse must be Christ.
