Christ's Physical Birthplace Not Public

The knowledge of the actual birthplace of Jesus was not publicly known, as these verses show.

Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth. (Luke 1:26)

At the time of the conception of Christ by the Holy Spirit, Mary was living in Nazareth, a city in the district of Galilee. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; to enroll himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being great with child.

While they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:4-7)

Shortly before the birth of Christ, Joseph and Mary left Nazareth and journeyed to Bethlehem, where Christ was born. This fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy of Micah 5:2, concerning His birthplace.

Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. And he arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt; was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt did I call my son. (Matt. 2:13‑15)

Sometime after Christ was born, Joseph and Mary and their child journeyed to Egypt to avoid the persecution of Herod.

But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead that sought the young child's life.

And he arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither;

and being warned of God in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee, and came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth;

that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, that he should be called a Nazarene. (Matt. 2:19‑23)

When it was again safe to do so, they returned to Israel. Joseph brought his family back to Nazareth, where he had previously dwelt and made his living.

And the multitudes said, this is the prophet, Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee. (Matt. 21:11)

Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these things, said, This is of a truth the prophet. Others said, this is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was? (John 7:40‑42)
